NYPD Baseball 2010 Recap

New York’s Finest Baseball Club started workouts in the Police Academy Gym last February preparing for another grueling schedule at hand. The Team was the reigning two time NYCMBL AA Champions and looking for an unprecedented third Title.  The Finest was also looking to win more than 50 games for the third year in a row. With a few new faces (Frank Delgado, Shamus Smith, Sammy Sosa, Mike Mainolfi, Hipolito Gil) The Team seems to be restocked for their 2010 campaign.

March-

New York’s Finest Baseball Club purchased 50 tons of MLB quality Baseball clay, as well as specialized pitcher’s mound and batter’s box clay to continue their upgrade Floyd Bennett Field, which is their home for the next 7 months. A winter of fundraising paid off, as the new playing surface revamped the old infield surface. The Finest is now ready for another championship run.

April

- The NYPD squad opens the season on a west coast road trip to Los Angeles California. The Finest took three of the four games from the LAPD Centurions. The Finest went out west for the week to prepare for the 2010 season and to compete with one of the top teams in law enforcement. New York's Finest played solid defense, had great pitching and timely hitting for the first three games. Game four fatigue set in and the Finest failed to execute. "Overall the Team played well, everyone got their work in to prepare for the 2010 Season" Says Team Captain Ruben Cardona. Both Teams had a chance to "Break Bread" with one another during a Barbeque hosted by the Centurions at the LAPD Police Academy. Many new friendships were made as a few were rekindled from the Finest first trip out to Los Angeles in 2004. New York Finest Baseball Club wants to thank The LAPD Centurions for their gracious hospitality and is looking forward to the next time the two teams meet. The Finest would return Home to wet weather and only get two more game in for the month. The Finest finished April 5-1.

May-

After which seemed to be a great start, The Finest had a tough time in May. The club only wins 3 of 9 games heading into Memorial Day Weekend in Philadelphia. The Team played 3 games over the weekend versus Philadelphia Police Department Blue Sox and the Philadelphia Fire Brigade Baseball Teams. The Finest traveled down to Philadelphia with FDNY who also played the two teams. With picture perfect weather, and a gorgeous field, you couldn't ask for a better weekend to play baseball. New York Finest split the two games with the Philadelphia Police squad. The Blue Sox topped the Finest 6-4 in game one. The Finest bounced back in game two, Defeating Philadelphia Police Blue Sox 13-4. In Game # 3, NY Finest pounded out 21 runs and defeated the Philadelphia Fire Brigade 21-3. This was the first time New York Finest has ever played either of these two Ball Clubs. Could we have another New York- Philadelphia Rivalry in the Making?  The Finest had a great time in their quick weekend trip and is looking forward to some more in the near future. The Boys in blue Finished out May 5-7 and was 10-8 on the year.

June-

With the weather warming up, The Finest hope to do so as well. The team’s first major event of the year was set. New York's Finest Baseball Club hosted their First ever Golf Outing at The Sprain Lake Golf Course in Yonkers, New York. The event was a huge success. 126 golfers attended, which was made up of family, friends and colleagues of New York's Finest Baseball Club. Everyone had a great time. Many prizes were awarded to top golfers and raffle winners. The Finest would also begin playing good Baseball. The NYPD Baseball Team returned to St. Paul, Minnesota to participate in a Law enforcement Tournament. NY Finest went undefeated in the event. The NYPD teamed up with several players from St. Paul PD and played an exhibition game vs. a local Town team the Chaska Cubs. The combined team fell to the Cubs 5-4 in 10 innings. Lee Jones and Dave Mischo homered in the game. After the game, NY Finest players met with some of the fans. NY Finest players made a young boy's night. Players gave the boy (who is a New York Yankee fan) a team hat, Tee shirt, autographed bat and ball. As he left the park he told his dad " This was the best day of my life". Instances like this one humbles the players and makes the trip well worth it. The team would go 6-3 in the month including a 12-3 win at the HHH Metrodome in St Paul, MN vs. St. Paul Police Department. New York’s Finest won the first St. Paul PD invitational Tournament, in which teams from Chicago Police Department Finest, LAPD Centurions, and the host St. Paul Police Department Finest were on hand.

July

- New York’s Finest started off July with their Annual Anthony G Vazquez Memorial Tournament. Dallas FD, FDNY, NY State Troopers, NY State Court Officers, And the NYC Corrections all participated. The Finest would win their 3rd Anthony Vazquez Tournament Title, Defeating Dallas Fire Department 11-1 in the Finals. The Finest held their 2nd Annual Family Day on July 25. The Day started with the NYPD Football Team Playing the NYPD Hockey Team in softball. There was plenty of food and fun, as many department units were on hand to withstand the 95 degree heat. First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro was there to root the Finest to a 12-9 victory over the New York State Troopers.  The Final game of the month was the Annual NYPD/FDNY Charity Game at MCU Park. With close to 7,000 people on hand, FDNY jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.  The Finest would chip away and force the game into extra innings. FDNY scratched out a run in the 13nth inning to defeat the Finest 5-4. The Finest finish 11-4 in July.

August-

With the Playoffs approaching, NewYork Finest (2008 & 2009 champions) is looking to make a run at the NYCMBL AA Championship for the third year in a row. With a couple of injuries to the pitching staff, the remaining arms had to burden the extra weight. They did! The Team went 12-4 sweeping the New York Rip Tide, and taking a tight  best of three series from the New York Longhorns advancing to the NYCMBL AA Finals once again.

September

- New York's Finest would meet the Long Island Astros in the NYCMBL AA Finals. The Astros defeated FDNY in their semifinal round and look to take it to the two time champs. In a great Championship Series, New York’s Finest won in 4 games. Each game was extremely tight and decided by only one run. The three consecutive NYCMBL AA championship Titles has never been done in League history.  New York's Finest hits the road one last time. The Team traveled to Dallas for the 2nd Dallas Fire Classic. The NYPD Squad won the 2009 Tournament and is looking for the repeat. The Finest did just that, going undefeated and winning its second Title in as many years.  The Finest return from Dallas with a record of 49-21-2 with one game left. That game would be the season Finale vs. FDNY at the Ball Park at St. George (Home of the Staten Island Yankees).

October- In a Long Season (73 Games) , The Finest put on their uniforms one last time for the season. The Club responded, defeating FDNY 5-3 on a gorgeous night in Staten Island. The Team got win number 50 (50-21-2) for the third straight season and improved to 163-59-8 in that time.

New York’s Finest Baseball Club would like to thank all of our supporters throughout the year. It would be impossible to have a successful organization as we do without the support from our Families, Friends, Sponsors, and the Department we represent.  See you in 2011!
