2012 Baseball Preview New York’s Finest Baseball Club will be entering their 19th season. Just like years past, the 2012 season is expected to be special. After a long winter, the Finest are glad to be back on the baseball diamond for another grueling 80 + game schedule. The Finest went 51-13 in 2011, winning their 4th consecutive New York City Metro Baseball League Championship and NYCMBL Mid-Week Championship. Local Leagues Several changes have taken place over the winter. The 4 time NYCMBL Champions will not be returning to the League in 2012. After compiling a 128-31 record in 4 seasons, The Finest will head north to compete against new teams. New York’s Finest will be looking to make big impression in the Westchester Rockland Wood Bat League (WRWBL). The Finest will play most of the 34 game season in Rockland and Westchester Counties. The Team will still be utilizing Floyd Bennett Field for some home games in WRWBL. The Finest will also play in the National Police and Fire Baseball Congress. The NPFBC is comprised of all Law Enforcement and Fire Department Teams in the Tri-State area. This newly formed League will add 18-20 games, and make for some friendly rivals.
Tournaments Several Tournaments have been planned for the 2012 season. New York’s Finest will be hos ting the first one. The Anthony Vazquez Memorial Tournament will be held in New York City May 30-June 2nd in New York City. Proceeds of the Tournament go to a scholarship fund that was created by Anthony’s Parents Jose (NY Finest President) and Rose after a tragic accident took the life of young Anthony April 2, 2003. This year’s Tournament is expecting 12-16 Teams from across the Country. Some out of state Teams already have committed to attend. LAPD, Dallas Fire, Philadelphia Police and Philadelphia Fire are a few. The NYPD Team will be heading to San Diego June 18-23 to participate in the United State Police & Fire Championships. This will be the first time New York’s Finest will be attending.
The Finest will also go to Canada in September to play in the Constable Garrett Styles Memorial Tournament Hosted by the York Regional Police Department BlueSox. The Final Tournament will be in Dallas Texas for the 3 rd Dallas Fire Classic. New York’s Finest will return as defending Tournament Champions. The Finest won in 2009 & 2010. Charity Events On May 12, New York’s Finest will play the Rockland Boulders (Independent Can-Am League) in an exhib ition charity game at P rovident Bank Park in Pomona, NY at 6:00 PM. This is the first time the Finest will be playing a professional Team. The Rockland Boulders are a professional team which plays in the Can-Am Independent League. Their gorgeous stadium has been voted as the “Best New Ball Park in America”. The exhibition game will be played for a charity that will be announced at a later date as well as other details. The 13nth Annual NYPD/FDNY Charity Game at MCU Park will be Friday July 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM. This game has become a regular patron of Coney Island each summer. Attendance has grown each year, topping 6,000 fans in 2011. Both Teams circle this date on their calendar and treat it as the super bowl of the summer.
