The two biggest
Police departments have been competitive on the playing fields in other
sports, but never in the game of Baseball. That was until September of
2003. NYPD faced off with L.A.P.D in the finals of the Mike Anaya
Tournament in San Diego California. NY Finest couldn't handle L.A, as the
Centurions were victorious 9-1 to take the title. That single game
propelled the first of many more to come. In 2004, The Finest invited LAPD
east to compete in the Anthony Vazquez Memorial Tournament and Los Angeles invited the Finest
to the west coast for their 5th annual Celebrity Swing-a-Thon. In
June of 2004 NYPD and LAPD met again for the first time since the Mike
Anaya Tournament. NY Finest held off a late inning
comeback by the Centurions to slide by 7-6 and tie the lifetime series
one game a piece setting up game three in Los Angeles the following month. LAPD
would advance to the semi-finals, but they fell short losing to FDNY in
a pitchers duel 1-0. NY Finest would take the championship of the first
year of the event.
July 2004, In a highly promoted event L.A.P.D would meet NYPD in
the 5th Annual Celebrity-swing-a-thon in Los Angeles California. With more than 1,000 kids from the L.A area,
Actors, Sports Stars such as Manny Mota of the L.A Dodgers, Super Bowl
MVP from the L.A Raiders, Los Angeles City Council President Padilla, and former
NYPD Police commissioner and current L.A Chief of police Bratton in attendance. The
Day was full of events, contests, and giveaways for the kids including baseball and football
instructional clinics. A Homerun hitting contest followed, where some of
the actors competed with NYPD and LAPD players. NY Finest' Rich Custudio
won the homerun derby as he was the last contestant of the day. After a
day of fun it was time for the main event. Game three, East meets West.
NY Finest Jumped out early and often scoring 3 runs in the first and
second innings and two runs in the third. The Finest rallied for 3 more
runs in the fourth inning
to expand the lead to ll-3. New York would return home happy winning
12-4, and now lead the series 2 games to 1.
New York and L.A may meet again for the third time in
as many months as both teams will be participating in the international police
Olympics in Las Vegas in the second week of August. As a friendship and rivalry
began, Both teams will be anticipating their next
meeting.

NY Finest would like to thank the Los
Angeles Police Department for inviting us to Los Angeles to participate
in this charitable event and for their gracious hospitalities. We
enjoy playing other departments, but it makes it that much more
rewarding when
you compete for a good cause. Once Again, Thanks- NYPD Baseball
