Mike Anaya Memorial tournament September, 2005 The mike Anaya Memorial Law Enforcement Tournament In san Diego, California New York's Finest Baseball Club will be attending the, "Mike Anaya Memorial Tournament" for Police and Firemen, Which is played at San Diego State University's Tony Gwynn Stadium. Aztec Baseball and John Marlow sponsor the event, with the Deputy Sheriff's Association providing the necessary insurance. Aztec Head Coach Jim Dietz allows us to use his fine facility to play the tournament in Mike Anaya's honor. All proceeds are placed into the the "Mike Anaya memorial scholarship fund" established at San Diego State University. Mike Anaya played for coach Dietz's Aztecs from 1972-1975. Mike Anaya and John Marlow were teammates at SDSU. Mike later became a San Diego Police Officer and John a Deputy Sheriff. Mike was fatally wounded in the line of duty Responding to a dispute. The Teams who have participated in the tournament in the past are all Police and Fire teams. NY Finest did not attend the tournament in 2004, but we will be returning in 2005 with hopes of bringing home a championship.
Fire Teams
2003 NY Finest returned to sunny southern California with hope of a better outcome from the previous year. Games one and two were against the two San Diego Police Department teams. NY Finest were victorious in both games 7-1 and 8-2 respectively. Game three was against the Orange County Sheriffs Department. NY Finest scored 7 runs in the last inning to come from behind to go 3-0 in the tournament. Game #4 was against LA. County Fire Department were a NY Finest win would put them into the Semi-Finals. NY Finest came up short losing 5-2 and making the trip to the Finals a bit more difficult. Now a loss sends New York home. Game # 5 was against the host team SD Sheriffs. NY was victorious 5-2 sending them to the Semi-Finals. The game was a rematch of Game #4 vs. LA. County Fire Department. NY scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to come from behind again winning 8-7 sending them to Finals against the winner of the L.A.P.D - L.A.F.D game. NY Finest goes into their 4th game of the day. (by that time it was night) trying to bring home a championship. The Finals Pitted a much anticipated L.A.P.D vs. NYPD all police final. NY scored one run in the top of the first, but that would be all. Fatigue settled in as L.A.P.D took a 5-1 lead into the 8th inning. LAPD scored 4 more times in their half of the 8th as they won 9-1. Following the game, the two teams vowed to meet again next year. 2002 The New York Finest Baseball Club participated in the 2002 Mike Anaya Memorial Tournament. It was a trip that has engraved many memories into each one of our hearts. The city of San Diego took us in as one of there own and treated all of us with the up most respect. On September 11, 2002, Members of the NY Finest Participated in many ceremonies. We Raised the flag at the SD Harbor Patrol Headquarters, Raised the Flag at the SD Airport and participated in the closing ceremonies at the Del Mar Race track. On September 12, 2002, NY Finest Baseball club were guests of the San Diego Padres. We participated in there tribute to America on the first home game. We were warmly greeted by San Diego Padre Stars such as Ryan Klesko, Phil Nevin, Mark Kotsay, and Former Yankee great Dave Raghetti now the pitching coach of the Padres. During the first inning NY Finest Juan Rosario made a one handed grab on a foul ball and made all the TV highlight clips. On Sunday September 16 NY Finest was the guests of the San Diego Chargers as they took on the new Texas Texans. Although the team lost all three games the trip was a success. We all enjoyed ourselves, made new friends and got a chance to talk with personnel from different departments from California. We all are looking to meet again in the future.
