Letter From Dyrk’s Uncle: First of all Dameon was moved by fact that you guys had put enough thought and emphasis on the unfortunate circumstances that his family has been going through to even consider doing a fundraiser for him and his family. He understands that this is in the primitive states of coming together, but is already thankful beyond words for your gratitude. But here is the scoop on Dyrk Ryland Burcie (who will be 4 in November). While giving their son a bath on March 8th, Dameon noticed a lump on the portion of Dyrk's abdomen. They decided to take him in to the ER on Wednesday rather than wait for an appointment with his pediatrician. Within a matter of hours doctors told Dameon and Shelley that Dyrk probably had liver cancer. After a CT scan and some lab work it was confirmed, and worse that was initially expected, was confirmed. The results showed that Dyrk had stage 4 liver cancer (stage 4 meaning it has already spread to other organs) which has already spread to his lungs. Dyrk’s liver was completely engulfed by cancer and he also has two small masses in his lungs. Not only is liver cancer bad enough, but to come find out that only 12 pediatrics have been diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in the country in the last 3 years. Initially doctors told Dameon and Shelley that if the cancer had only taken over the liver and he was transplant candidate there was approximately a 65% chance of a positive outcome, and if the cancer had spread beyond that, then the percentages diminished drastically. Unfortunately as you are informed, Dyrk is just about the worst case scenario. Since the original diagnosis, other doctors have been slightly more optimistic, but are also realistic as well. Dyrk is undergoing 6 rounds of chemo on a 21 day cycle (so approximately 4 months). This includes an initial dose on day one and a short stay at the hospital of around 3 days or so. Then there will be more chemo treatments on days 9 and 16, then starting back over after day 21. After a few months of chemo, he will be reevaluated on his progression and they will see if his even a liver transplant candidate. So far Dyrk started his first round of Chemo on Monday, March 14th and is already experiencing just about all the side effects possible. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dyrk and the Burcie family. Thanks again, Jarrad (uncle) Dear, NYPD Baseball Supporters The NYPD will be making an unscheduled trip to Dallas for this benefit.
