April 7, 2008 at Roberto Clemente State Park 7:30 PM (NYCMBL AA Division Opening Night)

On Monday night , April 7th, 2008 the NYPD Baseball Club was mobilized to Roberto Clemente State at 1930hrs to take on last year’s NYC Metro League defending Champions, Latin Flavor. The weather was colder than the New Year’s Eve Detail but right from the start of the game, the heat was on. This no doubt, was a detail where hats and bats had to be readily available.
In the top half of the first inning, NYPD took advantage of Latin Flavor’s wild pitching as two runs scored. However, in the bottom half of the second, NYPD starter Fernando Espindola got a taste of Latin Flavor as they quickly tied the game.
NYPD re-took the lead in the third when SS Ruben Cardona homered to right center to put the Finest back on top. A few innings later, NYPD scored twice more, and it seemed the Finest were on their way to cuffing Latin Flavor. However, in the bottom of the sixth with the Finest leading 5-3, a missing report was filed because Espindola was having problems finding the strike zone. Quickly, Latin Flavor loaded the bases, and Espindola after a fine effort in his first 2008 outing, was given lost time from the game. Coach Vazquez requested for backup and brought in reliever Dennis Hulse. Hulse was able to get the first out on a ground ball force out at home plate. Then came the rookie mistake. With the bases loaded, Hulse surrendered a jailbreak Grand Slam to put Latin Flavor up 7-5. Hulse was able to hold down Latin Flavor for the next 1 2/3 innings. Offensively for the next 2 innings, NYPD was in hot pursuit of catching Latin Flavor, but to no avail, Flavor was gone on arrival.
In the top half of the ninth, down by 2 runs, the NYPD needed a critical response from their offense. Finest entered the ninth with four veterans leading the charge. Dave Mischo walked, Lee Jones doubled to right and Rich Custodio blooped a single to right to make the score 7-6. On a crucial 0-2 count, catcher Eric Sorensen singled sending pinch runner Chris Waye home to tie the score. With Custodio on third, no out, rookie Jason Filoramo was sent to the plate. Filoramo flied to short center but Custodio broke for the plate anyway. The ball was at the plate in time but Custdio used all his weight he gained in the off season to jar the ball loose from the Latin Flavor backstop, thus giving Finest an 8-7 lead. Newcomer Harry Bonhomme, who came in the game in the 8th, kept Latin Flavor on lockdown in the ninth inning giving Finest their first victory of the season.
In sum and substance, there is no doubt the Finest came out to play. With the exception of a few miscues on the field NYPD showed heart and their desire to win. Because the Finest were victorious, Dennis Hulse’s Command Discipline for surrendering a Grand Slam will be adjudicated as a warn and admonish. No further misconduct noted by other players!
