RIPTIDE swept away by NYPD in twin bill:

Sunday May 1, 2011

Although the NYPD had a busy day securing the city streets because of several special events around city, they did manage to “fill a baseball detail” at Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, as New York’s Finest took on the New York Riptide in a doubleheader on Sunday. The forecast for Sunday’s twin bill was roaring waves approaching the Bronx as a mini rivalry between the Finest and the Riptide seem to be brewing. However, it turned out there were only tiny ripples of water as the Boys in Blue easily washed away the Riptide under sunny blue skies.

In game one, it seemed the NYPD was more like a charging hurricane over the Riptide as they scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Finest “walked the beat” several times around the bases thanks to wild Riptide pitching and plated more runs on defensive miscues. In the bottom of the second, the Riptide tried to make waves as they brought the game closer to 10-6 off starter Chris Volz. However, Jose “Dirty” Sanchez would come in relief in the third, and stifle Riptide batters the rest of the way. Designated Hitter Lee Jones built the final levy against the waves in game one, by crushing a home run to right field in the sixth inning as the Finest prevailed to a 13 to 6 win.

Whoever said “Rank didn’t matter on the Finest baseball team” is totally wrong, as game two starter Lieutenant Steve Phelan “took complete charge”. Phelan was helped out by his subordinates with a 4-0 first inning lead and even took a perfect game into the 6 inning. Although tiring in the seventh inning, Phelan managed to lead his troops and pitch  a complete game as the Finest cuffed the Tides in the second game, 7 to 2.

The Finest finished their “Bronx hats n’ bats detail” with two victories over the Riptide improving their weekend NYCMBL record to 3-0. At days end, there were no casualties, no tsunamis, no monsoons, no Riptides, just calm waters.
